As part of eaga’s Corporate Social Responsibility we have this year adopted our first school and the scheme is proving to be a real success. As part of the adoption, eaga, along with members of the local community, have created something very special for the school.
The eco-garden at St. Luke’s C of E Primary School in Worksop is a one-of-a-kind in the UK. Part designed by the school children themselves, the eco-garden is not simply somewhere for fruit and vegetables to be grown, but is rather an outdoor classroom where pupils can experience the benefits of ‘green living’ first hand.
When St. Luke’s originally approached eaga about funding this project, their request was to have an area that is low maintenance, requires very little water and attention, but stays attractive all year round. They also asked for it to be an area in which the children can learn and also be somewhere that encourages plants and wildlife native to this country. With this in mind, the school children went about designing what they thought would be the ideal eco-garden.
Since then, eaga, along with much assistance from teachers, a number of parents of the school children and donations and discounts from local businesses, have created an eco-friendly outdoor classroom and garden for St. Luke’s. The area includes, amongst other things, a solar panel, hydroelectric power and a wind turbine, all of which can be used for scientific experiments and help the children to understand the benefits of creating power in an environmentally sound way.
